Employment Law

Learning Objectives

After reading this chapter, you should understand the following:

  1. Various kinds of prohibited discrimination under Title VII and examples of each kind
  2. The various other protections for employees imposed by federal statute, including the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA) and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)

In this chapter, we will review aspects of employment law.  There are many laws to which companies must adhere, the primary ones include discrimination laws, Americans with Disabilities and Sexual Harassment laws.  We will look at employment at will toward the end of this chapter.  That rule holds that in the absence of a contractual agreement otherwise, an employee is free to leave employment at any time and for any reason; similarly, an employer is free to fire employees at any time and for any reason.
