Hello students!  This is a course designed to help you understand the numbers part of a business.  Now, don’t freak out!  You only need basic math skills and a spreadsheet software, like Excel.  You got this!

We can do so much in identifying a customer need, developing a product, marketing the product, and selling it…..but we just don’t know if our business is sustainable without capturing the numbers side of the business.

You will learn what financial statements are all about and how to analyze them.  You will learn how to calculate how many products you need to sell just to break even.  You will learn how to put together a budget.  We will introduce the skills needed for you to evaluate whether you should make a particular purchase, like new equipment.  Finally, at the end, we will provide a module on personal finance, yes, that is your financial picture.

You will need all of this information whether you go in to operations, human resources, or start your own business.

This is important stuff, so make sure you allocate enough time to review the material, do the problems and really absorb the concepts.  We will provide lots of real life situations so you understand the context of Business Finance!

Many times, the book uses the word “Accounting”.  Don’t think you are in the wrong class!  The author of our book uses the term “managerial accounting” as a synonym for “finance”.  The two are effectively the same.

Ready, Set?  Let’s rock!
