11 Computer Aided Menu Design
Vicki Mendham
Using your computer to create a menu will save you printing costs and allow you to make changes to your menu quickly. Finding the right program for you is imperative. Some people use templates, but they can be constraining to the process and not always allow you to do what you wish.
Creating QR codes so customers can look up your menu online is a good thing to supplement paper menus as well. Keep in mind, not all customers have phones to look up menus and it can compromise the dining experience in some situations. QR codes can be created by using a website. You can search for websites on the web to generate them for you.
Using computers in writing restaurant menus can streamline the process and enhance the final product in several ways. Before you begin with creating a menu, you need to think about presentation and layout. You will need to choose the right software. Programs like Microsoft Word or Google Docs are useful for drafting and editing menu content. They offer basic formatting tools and ease of collaboration. You can also use design software such as Adobe InDesign, Canva, or Microsoft Publisher that provide advanced design features, allowing for more creative and visually appealing menus. They offer templates and layout options that are useful for professional-looking menus, creating menu items, calculating prices, and managing ingredient lists.
You will need to design the layout. Some software has useful templates. Templates can also limit what you can do, so choose one wisely or use a program like Word that you have design freedom. You can customize fonts, colors, and graphics to align with your restaurant’s theme. Consistent use of colors, fonts, and imagery enhances brand identity and keep the menu easy to read.
Proofreading is essential to any good menu. First, look for proper spelling and grammar. Use built-in spelling and grammar check tools to ensure no errors in the text. Be careful, though, that you do not accept all changes; food terms may need to be checked in a physical dictionary. Consider having multiple people review the menu to catch mistakes or make improvements.
Always maintain consistency in formatting, font usage, and item descriptions throughout the menu. Consistent formatting helps in creating a professional appearance.
Ensure that the final design is print-ready. Use high-resolution settings and select appropriate paper quality for physical menus. You should also convert the menu to digital formats (PDF, image files) for online distribution and integration with your restaurant’s website or app. This can also facilitate easy updates and changes
You probably will want pictures in your menu. If you do not already have some pictures to use, then you can look in Microsoft Word for pictures or clipart. If you do not want to use the clipart and pictures that come with Microsoft Word, then you can search on the web for them in several search engines. The Image Search on Google will probably provide you with the most results. However, remember that the image may be copyrighted and if you were to use this for commercial enterprise, you would have to ask permission and more than likely be charged a fee. And copyrighted or not, you will need to identify where the picture came from. This can be done in various ways, but for a menu, you might want to place a note somewhere on your menu you design for your class (probably on the back) to indicate where you found the photo or picture. There are several sites on the Internet that have free public domain stock clipart and photos, which means you do not have to ask for permission to use them unless it specifically states not for commercial use.
By paying attention to these elements, you can create and maintain a professional menu that highlights your offerings and enhances your customers dining experience.
